TO FLY / ON FOUNDATIONS
2021
Various natural and synthetic fibres
To Fly / On Foundations is a dual series of works that respond to each other. With the use of similar warp and weft materials, they together form an exploration of the relationship between the sky and earth.
Weathered Shore
Paper Yarn, Viscose, Polyamide
Weathered Shore
Standing at the coast, battered by the roaring waves, weathered and crumbling. What the water takes, it gives back, symbiosis over millennia.
Crescent Sun
White hot, razor sharp, the face of the sun remains, hidden but still lurking beneath the shadows.

Overland Flow
In hilly tracts, golden millet grain stalks stand against the soil and skies. In neat
rows they line up, swift water running in-between.

Cumulus Obscure
After the storm, clouds fill the sky, and as far as my eyes can see, fluffy, soft masses cover the horizon.
Sand Grain
I feel the crunch of the sand beneath my feet, a guidemap to where I should go, constantly rooting me to the here and now.

Second Contact
Looking for glimpses of something else, faint bands appearing and disappearing, amidst a blanket of white.
Earthrise
Wool, Cotton, Viscose, Metal
Earthrise
My eyes track the path of the sun, rising and sinking, light and shadow, ceaseless, a shared eternal rhythm.
Elluvium
Cotton, Viscose, Polyamide, Jute, Paper Yarn
Elluvium
A slow pile-up over time, objects and memories deposited, filling up spaces and minds. But what else would we be without this, that which fills us with joy and richness.
Shadow Bands
In turbulence, through a barrier of air, thin waves dance in motion, reflecting and refracting in the morning light.

Subsoil
Linen, Wool, Viscose, Cotton, Polyamide
Subsoil
A layer just below the surface soil, the first layers of the foundation we live upon. With minerals, rich iron and aluminium, bands upon bands, compressed.
Light Interface
What we see is shaped by light and shadow, sometimes prominent, other times subtle and shy. Like a earnest companion, following through our lives.

Peatland
In the surface of the dark soil, rich in substance, layers of coal and water
collect. In death and decay lies everything, and in the end, everything that has ever lived returns to the earth.
