CHROMA DIFFUSE
2023
Cotton, Linen, Paper Yarn
Chroma is described as the purity of colour, an experience of its total intensity. One day at home, I spotted discoloured towels that were accidentally bleached, revealing a striking orange beneath the green dye. Nestled between the fibres of the towel, colours diffused in and out, shifting and revealing themselves under and over layers. I was drawn to this moment of chance as an opportunity to look beneath the surface, a way to experience joy even in seemingly not-so-perfect states of our daily use objects.
The fabrics in the collection are a combination of jacquard woven fabrics and second-hand finds, all further digitally printed. I see these pieces as not having a defined front and back, as it is often the case in printed textiles. A lack of material while test printing led me to printing on both sides of the fabric to maximise space, and by doing so, an effect emerged where the front and back patterns subtly interacted when held to the light.
This collection was a joint runner up in the Epson x Aalto University Digital Textile Printing Competition where I envisioned this double-sidedness as a possible future of digital printing technology, one that not only sees water and resource-efficient ways of printing and dyeing but also new ways of thinking of textile surfaces.
