THORN FIELD
2023
Cotton, Viscose, Linen
Thorn Field draws inspiration from the everyday, embracing the sometimes frustrating experiences I had with my everyday textiles. In my diary I’d described my bedding as ‘thorny’ - A bedsheet that was supposed to be soft, comforting and inviting, was in actuality, as they were being used, worn and full of pills. Living with my textiles, I realised they exist in their natural states, sometimes irritating yet comforting or special.
Thorn Field is a double-sided woven fabric, making use of a twill both in its repeat as well as the weave structure, giving it an almost diamond pattern when viewed from certain angles and lighting. The basic structure of a twill weave gives the textile its characteristic drape, which reminded me of the fluidity of my own sheets.
I find myself sleeping, sitting, and lounging on the bed often, nesting everything of me. It sometimes feels itchy in the many little piles on its surface, bundles of fluff, big and little, all rolled up and dusted around. In memory, it seems like I could spend forever, cocooned in this private reality, suspended. They graze across my legs, little thorns, and in this moment, I stay, grounded in them. The pale, watery sunlight dances in waves across the walls, glancing across the sheets faint bands appearing and disappearing. From its nest, I have watched the world flying through outside my windows, linear beams of light glowing.
